Pendle Hill

Welcome to our Lancashire Witches 400 Project Blog Spot!

Project Overview
The Lancashire Witches 400 Project will explore the heritage of the persecution of the Lancashire Witches and the 400th anniversary of their trial and subsequent death.

The project will consider the heritage of Lancashire - the historical context of religious and social persecution and its relevance to intolerance and injustice today.  By working with historians and heritage professionals, we will consider the role of 'witches' in 1612 as wise women or healers within rural communities and reflect upon the marginalisation of individuals and a collective loss of healers and shaman within the evolution of western societies.

The project will research the route the Lancashire Witches were taken, across the Bowland fells and explore through creative workshops and walking research local knowledge and history relating to place and identity, and this important period of Lancashire's historic past.

Class 4 at Padiham Green Church of England Primary School, Padiham, have been selected to become ambassadors for our own local history and develop new relationships with museums and local archive groups.
We are excited to be learning about a period of history which directly involves our locality.  We will look for links and try to establish explanations for the events.  We will locate areas on maps locally and throughout the county.

Sue Flowers of Green Close Studio will be working with us, focussing on plants - plants as threats to health, sustenance or cure, nutrition and healing.

Our art work will be exhibited at various venues within Lancashire.

One of the first physical activities planned is to climb Pendle Hill!  We are joining forces with Quernmore CE Primary School, Lancaster, and Brennands Endowed School, Slaidburn, and look forward to this venture.
