Comfort Food

Tuesday 21st February 2012

The children were tasked with homework during the half term holiday.  They were asked to think about the foods they would like to eat when feeling 'under the weather'.

We discussed how each of us has certain foods that we would associate with 'comforting' us if we were ill or feeling 'low'.  The task was to assertain the ingredients and sources of these foods.

The homework produced was imaginative, colourful and informed Sue's next lesson.

Class 4 presented their work and discussed the plants used within the food ingredients.  Sue had sourced the plants listed and displayed them for the children to view.  Plant produce was matched with the homework.  We also looked at images from the internet and began to identify the source ingredients.

Sue then gave us a 'Master Class' in the use of watercolours.  A demonstration of shades, use of water, brushstrokes, pencil guidelines, etc. helped the children understand the process.  They each received an individual palette of water colours.

Sue encouraged the children to try out the brush and colours before
creating a painting of one 'comfort' food item.

Later in the day the children were given the opportunity to try their hand at a composition of plant foods.

Some children scaled their paintings to miniatures whilst others used pastels to enhance their watercolours.

Another day, another gallery!
(We are running out of display space in the classroom!)

Thank you Sue - a third day where the children learned so much by being shown new skills, were highly motivated by the challenges and allowed time to experiment with success.

The postman brought Class 4 an envelope containing
handwritten and beautifully illustrated profiles of the
KS2 children at Quernmore CE Primary School.
The atmosphere was like Christmas Day when you first set eyes on your presents!
I've never seen the children so excited as when they received and read
the individually addressed letters.

THANK YOU Quernmore - we can't wait to meet you all in person!
